The Concert in Beijing

The Lufthansa flight was very comfortable and the cabin staff were chroming and very helpful.
This is a snapshot taken from my hotel window with my iPhone in which you can see the Forbidden City, the buildings in red. This is definitely worth a visit and I can recommend a good book to read before going there. It is a book called the last Empress by Anchee Min. A historical novel.

The last decades of the nineteenth century were a violent period in China's history, marked by humiliating foreign incursions and domestic rebellions and ending in the demise of the Ch'ing Dynasty. The only constant during this tumultuous time was the power wielded by one woman, the resilient, ever-resourceful Tsu Hsi -- or Empress Orchid, as readers came to know her in Anchee Min's critically acclaimed, best-selling novel covering her rise to power.

The Last Empress is the story of Orchid's dramatic transition from a strong-willed, instinctive young woman to a wise and politically savvy leader who ruled China for more than four decades. In this concluding volume Min gives us a compelling, very human leader who assumed power reluctantly and sacrificed all to protect those she loved and an empire that was doomed to die.

After reading this book a visit to the Forbidden City took on a very different look for me. I could see in my mind the places frequented by the people described in the book. If you get an audio guide you will be taken on a tour by Sir Roger Moore who makes it all very interesting.

You might want to check out his site.

After all this traveling Jeanne and I had the devil of a time trying to catch up on our sleep. We did get there a few days before to allow for jet lag but it did not work out as well as I had planned. I just could not get adjusted to the time change and on the day of the concert I was having a nap a couple of hours before the concert.

The concert was in the new National Center for the Arts, a magnificent new building with 1,800 seats. We sold something like 1,700.

Here is a link for you to look at it. It is located just past Tiananmen Square. this is a really impressive part of the city.

The concert went very well and was practically sold out. Michael Mc Hale and Jeanne played in it with me.

At the end of the concert we signed recordings including DVD's and books.

The management of the hall made an imprint of my hands which I signed. After all this we returned to the hotel to have a beer and a snack. Professor He from Shanghai and a friend came all the way to Beijing to hear the concert and spend some time with us.

There is a new Chinese Flute Association being formed and we were discussing how I could be of help with this. I am looking forward to the first CFA convention and hope I will be free to attend.
